People in Pennsylvania may believe that the traffic laws in their state are quite robust. These laws are put in place to help keep everyone safe on the roads. However, accidents continue to take place, and many of those accidents claim the lives of innocent people. In 2018, Pennsylvania saw a significant jump in the number of people killed in motor vehicle accidents to 1,190, up from 1,137 just the previous year and still higher that the number of fatalities recorded in 2016.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration records also show that the number of people killed in Pennsylvania in 2018 in accidents involving intoxicated drivers rose as did the number of pedestrians who lost their lives in crashes. These facts suggest that the laws in Pennsylvania may not be quite strong enough.

Forbes provided details on a report that was recently put out by a group called Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety. The report rated each state and Washington, D.C. based on the ability of its traffic laws to keep its residents safe. Ratings given were green, yellow or red. Pennsylvania received a yellow rating. Nearby Ohio, Virginia, Vermont and New Hampshire all received red ratings. Regionally, green ratings were only received by Delaware, Maine, Rhode Island and the District of Columbia.
